- Why do you audition first, then select the
musical?
- How do you select a musical each year?
- How can we find out what the rehearsal
schedule is?
- After auditions, how does my child know what
role they are in the musical?
Each musical has a different set of requirements
for leads and other parts. The number of female and male leads, and
the musical parts required (e.g. - Soprano, Alto, Baritone, Bass, etc.) vary
for each musical. It is critical for the director to determine the
availability of talents before a musical is selected, in order to match the
cast up to the appropriate musical.
After holding try outs and at least the first call backs, the Director can
begin to match up the available cast members with the potential musicals.
Musicals may also be considered for how well known they are (and therefore how
popular they might be), as well as for how easy or difficult they may be to
produce. The MFPA Board works with the Director to consider the various
options that the latest year's students are suited for.
The MFPA Board has established four primary ways to find out the rehearsal
schedule. First, a schedule is developed for the coming month's
rehearsals, generally about two weeks before the start of the month. Once
the dates are approved by the school, paper copies of the schedule are
distributed to the students. Second, a copy of the paper schedule is
posted on the MFPA's bulletin board, outside the Auditorium's main doors.
Third, we have established a hot line, so that you can always call to find out
the next two weeks' rehearsal schedules. That number is: 412-787-8680
Extension 5. (The hotline is available for the Musical from about January
through April each year, since it is shared with the Band). Finally, we will keep the latest schedule out here on our
website.
For the 2004 Spring Musical, this will work
somewhat different than in the past. After call backs, the MFPA Board
will post the cast selections of all major parts in the musical, along with
which musical was selected. Other parts will be determined at a later
date, as rehearsals are farther along. We will attempt to find a
part or role in the musical production for each student who is sincerely
interested in participating.
